On a blanket of fuzz guitars and driving bass, “No. 1 Fan” beclouds the route from loyal love to undying obsession, driving a winding path for Majesty Crush’s 1992 Fan EP. As the melodies grow in glimmer, the lyrical content becomes inversely darker. Take the paradoxical poppiness of “Penny For Love:” I’m always giving my body/Sometimes for less than a penny, too/It’s not always for money/Sometimes it feels so good.” Between pastel guitars and exhaling vocals, the Detroit quartet chases fleeting happiness and thrill without neglecting the pains of present reality. The five tracks represent walking away empty handed with an intoxicating headrush from going all in. Unraveling layer by layer, Fan allows you to enter the fantasy, but never solve the mystery.
